Sri Lankan architecture and culture can be read through multiple layers of time: the slow formation of ancient settlements, the conjunction of cultural & colonial ideas, the lived experience of space, the ongoing time of maintenance, and new growth. Time after time, Sri Lanka has been influenced with outsourced cultures and beliefs which today, is either commemorated or continuing. Time is also experienced by the traveler through movement and perception, while ancient, medieval and modern surroundings reveal time through decay, repair, and upkeep.
